How to Tackle a Cluttered Closet

How to Tackle a Cluttered Closet

Do you have a closet that is filled to the max?  Most everyone says yes to this question because if you have space, you tend to fill it up. Next question: Are you ready to clean out your closet? Then, we are ready to help.

  1. Remove everything! (Trust us, it’ll be worth it). As you remove items sort with like items (shirts with shirts or pants with pants – you get the idea!).
  2. Give the space a good vacuuming and dusting.
  3. Before you begin to put things back, evaluate the condition of the item and how often it’s worn. If you plan to donate, place in an appropriate space.
  4. Did you know most people wear 20% of their clothing 80% of the time. Doesn’t that sound IMG_0013crazy?  Oh, but it is true. To figure out if you are really wearing all of your clothes, try this trick. Place all you hangers backwards and only put them the correct way after you have worn the item on the hanger. In just a few weeks, you will see the amount of clothes you really never wear.
  5. The best tip for organizing your shoes is to get them off the floor. Put them on a rack or a shelf that is visible. It is totally understandable to have a couple pair of shoes on the ground, but try to keep the rest put away. As you bring in new shoes, remove the old ones from your closet.
  6. Designate a space for all your accessories. If you have a walk in closet, then it is helpful to keep all you accessories in one area of your closet. This makes it much easier to pull a complete outfit together. If you don’t have a walk in closet, then a dresser with a mirror also works nicely. The key is to keep everything together so you don’t have to do any searching for items.
  7. The last and, perhaps the most important, step to cleaning a closet is to place a donate basket or bag in it or somewhere very close by. This is the key to keep that closet organized! When you try something on that doesn’t fit quite right anymore or you simply don’t like anymore, toss it in the basket.
  8. Follow the One in, One out. Bring home a new sweater? Is there something that you can eliminate?
